Pence answers students' questions about his job

BY MICHELLE MANCHIR
STAFF WRITER

Rep. Mike Pence offered high-fives and self-deprecating humor to two dozen students Tuesday morning.

The eight-year congressman visited Richmond Academy during his visit to Richmond, where he read to students grades K-8 and shared stories about talking with President George W. Bush, his three children and meeting Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.

Pence, 47, told students that President Bush is shorter than they might expect, but "a really nice man," recalling a moment when he offered his children autographs.

Students asked the congressman about his pets (two cats and a dog) and his favorite part of his job (visiting soldiers in Iraq and giving tours of the Capitol).

Seventh-grader Jessica Pardo asked him if he'd ever run for president, a question she said she thought of before he came.

He said he hadn't thought about it "more or less than any American should," adding he had "no plans not to (run for the office)."

Eighth-grader Madyson Simpson said she was surprised how engaging Pence's talk was.

"I didn't think much of (his visit) until he started talking," she said.

Pardo said he struck a chord with her when he emphasized that students should "follow their dreams."
